AI can make a logo in seconds.
That’s way faster than I’ll ever be able to do it. I don’t want to stop you from saving time, but I do want to help you relieve headaches.
There are two main flaws with generating a logo using AI.
Strange artifacts, wonky details, distorted text and often way too much information for an effective logo.
The graphic produced is not “production-ready.” It will get rejected, as is, by printers, sign shops and graphic designers. It is not optimized for clean resizing and efficient printing.
Here’s a case study.
Generative AI gives non-designers and time conscious business owners access to more design options than ever.
But more options do not guarantee better decisions.
The logo above on the left side was created for a youth hockey team. It was generated with AI, shared with parents, voted on, and selected as the team logo. At first glance, it looked exciting and polished.
To my surprise, not one parent, athlete or coach saw the one giant flaw in this logo (well, more like 3 giant flaws).
There are 3 “hockey sticks” in the logo, yet not a single one of those sticks is a hockey stick. There are two strange paddle-looking objects and the character is holding what looks like a billy club.
It’s glaringly obvious once you see it, but yet the speed of which it was created, viewed and voted on somehow allowed non-hockey sticks to pass in a hockey team logo. Yikes.
The logo did not need to be replaced. It just needed to be fixed.
I redrew the stick as a hockey stick, adjusted the character’s hand to the right position for holding it, rebuilt the artwork as a vector, and reduced the number of colors so it would reproduce more cleanly on a black shirt.
The result is still based on the original AI-generated design. It just works better now.
AI still needs a trained eye.
AI can generate an idea quickly. It cannot reliably judge whether the result makes sense, whether the anatomy is correct, whether the composition works, or whether the artwork can actually be printed, embroidered, enlarged, or reproduced consistently.
Think about it, if an entire hockey team of parents, athletes and coaches did not immediately catch the major hockey-related flaw in this logo, imagine what the untrained eye is missing when it comes to the basic fundamental best practices of good design.
